About Betty

Age: 19-20
Gender: Mare
Breed: Curly Horse-Shetland Gypsy Vanner, Haflinger
Height: 15.3hh
Handler experience needed: TBD
Betty was brought to Mountain Shadows in November of 2024.
Betty is a 19-20 year old mare who was surrendered to us after being rehomed by a loving family when her original owner passed away.
After being passed around a few times following, she landed with a family who ultimately treated her poorly and starved her.
After being seized by the sheriff, she was retrieved by her original owners who contacted us. Though Betty is quite thin, she is an absolute sweetheart.
Betty has a history as an Amish cart horse, is kid broke and was a lesson pony at one point as well and as you can see by her thick curly coat and fuzzy ears, her breed is apparently an adorable mix of Curly Horse-Shetland Gypsy Vanner, and Haflinger!
She will need a lot of care and supplemental feed as she works to gain weight this winter. We will know more once she gets a full medical workup. We do know that she has a lump on her uterus and has injuries from being ridden hard on a road in her underweight condition. We are immediately fundraising for the care needed to get this girl healthy again.
