We Are Mountain Shadows Equine Revival

A rescue creating a better future for horses through care, training, and education. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit powered entirely by volunteers and donors, we not only take in and provide care for at-risk horses, but we also educate our volunteers and our supporters and train our horses from untouchable to rideable. That way, we can adopt the horses into loving homes and break the kill-auction and feedlot cycle.

“We could only watch so many horses with so much potential go through a kill auction under an hour from us before we decided to do something about it.

Our Board Members

Sarah Buckhold – Social Media Manager and Board Member

Horses have always been a major part of Sarah Buckhold’s life. After growing up trail riding, she began training her first 3 year old horse when she was 14. Since then she has held many roles including training horses for others, helping manage equine facilities, working as a wrangler at a horse camp, showing horses in horsemanship, pleasure, and trail, and attending Feather River College as a student in their equine ranch training program. Sarah still has Inca, the mare that she trained all those years ago, and uses her to help train the rescue horses from time to time. In addition to serving on the board of MSER, Sarah heads the rescue’s training program and is the rescue’s Social Media Manager.

Amy King – Treasurer

Amy King is a lifelong horse owner and grew up trail riding in the Sierra Nevada mountains. She attended Feather River College’s equine training program in Quincy CA where she refined her training skills using Les Vogt’s methods taught primarily by Mr. Chuck Mills. She has since trained and cared for her current horse, Jasper, and tragically had to say goodbye to her gelding Aztec after over 15 years of partnership. Amy assists in guiding MSER from her home in California.

Lis Luck – Secretary

Lis got her start with horses at a young age, which eventually led her to pursue her Bachelor’s of Equine Science from Colorado State University. She has worked with thoroughbreds at the racetrack, started young colts, managed a private riding facility, tried endurance racing, and much more. Lis has two horses of her own, a mother-daughter pair of Morgans, Angel and Izzy, and loves to trail ride in the mountains. She’s always looking for her next horse adventure.

Brittany Stadler – Acting Treasurer

Brittany Stadler grew up swapping barn chores for riding time at every opportunity. She is a current University of Wyoming student in the Business program and serves MSER as Acting Treasurer. She also coordinates and assists with every aspect of the rescue’s operations, including the volunteer program, communications, fundraising, and daily operations.

Janna Urschel – Board member

Animals and philanthropic work have been a major part of Janna Urschel’s life. She has also volunteered for Laramie Animal Welfare Society and has worked in non-profit management in Alaska and Montana. She grew up taking weekly dressage lessons, but did not have the opportunity to own a horse until moving to Laramie with her family, where she and her daughter began volunteering with MSER. They adopted MSER rescue horses Hope at the beginning of 2020 and T’Challa in the summer of 2021. Janna has served on the Board of Directors in various capacities since 2020.

Susan Weidel – President

Susan Weidel is a lawyer who has practiced law for over forty years in Chicago and Wyoming.  She has a strong dedication to volunteer service and animal welfare.  Susan has provided pro bono legal assistance to non-profit organizations for many years.  She has also served on the boards of several animal welfare organizations and worked directly with animal care for wolves, dogs, and horses.

Susan is involved in the day-to-day care of MSER horses and helps muck stalls, feed and exercise horses, and assist with special events and fundraising.  She is dedicated to ensuring the well-being of every rescue horse at MSER.
